Late one evening, my brother sent me a photo that immediately caught my attention. He had been driving home through a quiet rural road about 13 miles away from our house when he noticed something unusual in the sky.
The night was cloudy, and the sky had that deep brownish-gray tone that sometimes appears when city lights reflect off heavy clouds. But something inside those clouds looked strangeāalmost like a glowing shape hidden behind them.
Curious, he pulled over and took a few quick photos.
When he sent them to me, my first reaction was confusion. At first glance, it almost looked like something mysterious shining through the clouds, like a strange object or a hidden light source moving behind them.
But after looking closely, the explanation became much more fascinatingāand surprisingly common.
What Youāre Actually Seeing
The glowing shape in the clouds is most likely the moon shining through a thick layer of moving clouds.
When clouds pass in front of the moon, they can scatter the light in unusual ways. Instead of seeing a clear round moon, the light spreads across the clouds and creates strange glowing shapes that can look almost like something else entirely.
This effect is known as cloud illumination, and it happens when moonlight reflects and diffuses through moisture in the clouds.
Because clouds constantly move and change shape, the light can appear to shift or form patterns that look mysterious in photos.
Why It Looks So Strange in Photos
Our eyes and cameras donāt always capture light the same way.
When your phone camera tries to photograph a bright light source behind clouds, it adjusts exposure automatically. This can cause the moonās light to spread across the clouds, creating shapes that look unfamiliar or even dramatic.
Sometimes the clouds create patterns that resemble:
⢠Faces
⢠Eyes
⢠Animals
⢠Strange glowing objects
