It was something that grew in silence, in patience, in repetition, in small moments that didn’t look important at the time.
One evening, months later, Daniel came into the kitchen while Laura was cooking.
He stood there for a moment, then asked softly, “Do you think I can stay forever?”
Laura turned off the stove.
She walked over, knelt down, and gently held his hands.
“You’re not staying,” she said softly.
Daniel looked confused.
“You’re home,” she added.
And for the first time since the day he arrived, Daniel didn’t ask another question.
He just hugged her.
And didn’t let go for a very long time.
