Something I couldnât quite name.
âThatâs⊠weird,â he said finally.
Weird.
That was it?
âDo you know who wrote it?â I asked.
He shook his head. âNo. People were messing around, writing things on each other. It probably doesnât mean anything.â
But I wasnât convinced.
âPeople donât usually write things like that for no reason,â I said quietly.
He didnât respond right away.
Instead, he grabbed a towel and started trying to wipe it off.
âI think youâre overthinking it,â he said, avoiding my eyes. âIt was just a party.â
Just a party.
But something inside me had already shifted.
Over the next few days, I couldnât let it go.
I started noticing things I hadnât paid attention to before. The way he guarded his phone. The way he stepped outside to take calls. The way his stories about work felt⊠incomplete.
Small things.
But together, they painted a picture I didnât want to see.
Finally, I decided I needed answers.
Not guesses. Not assumptions.
The truth.
I reached out to someone who had been at the partyâa mutual acquaintance. I kept it casual, careful not to reveal too much.
âHey,â I said. âQuick question⊠do you remember anything unusual from the Christmas party?â
There was a pause before they replied.
âWhat do you mean?â
I hesitated, then said, âJust⊠anything involving my husband.â
Another pause.
Longer this time.
And then the message came.
âI didnât think it was my place to say anything⊠but since youâre askingâŠâ
My heart started pounding.
âThere was a woman,â they continued. âThey were talking most of the night. It didnât look innocent.â
I felt the air leave my lungs.
âAnd the writing?â I asked.
The reply came quickly this time.
âI think she wrote it.â
Everything inside me went quiet.
Suddenly, those words made sense in a way I wish they hadnât.
âKEEP THE CHANGE. HEâS NOT WORTH IT.â
It wasnât random.
It wasnât a joke.
It was a message.
Not for him.
For me.
That night, I sat across from him at the kitchen table, the silence between us heavier than anything I had ever felt.
âI know,â I said simply.
He looked up, confused.
âKnow what?â
I took a deep breath.
âAbout the party. About her.â
His face changed instantly.
And in that moment, before he even said a wordâŠ
I had my answer.
