How to Clean the Defrost Drain:
- Unplug the Fridge: Safety first! Always unplug your refrigerator before attempting any cleaning or repairs.
- Locate the Drain Hole: Check your fridge’s manual if you’re unsure. Usually, it’s at the back wall of the freezer or fridge section, near the bottom. Sometimes you’ll see a small hole or funnel-like opening.
- Clear Visible Debris: Remove any visible food particles or ice buildup around the drain.
- Flush the Drain: Use warm (not boiling) water to flush the drain hole. You can use a turkey baster, a small funnel, or a syringe to gently squirt warm water into the drain to melt and wash away clogs.
- Use a Soft Tool: If the clog persists, gently insert a pipe cleaner, thin wire, or a flexible plastic tube to clear any remaining debris — but be careful not to damage the drain.
- Check the Drain Pan: While you’re at it, locate the drain pan underneath the fridge, clean it, and ensure it’s properly positioned to collect water.
- Plug the Fridge Back In: Once you’re done, plug the fridge back in and monitor to see if the leak stops.
