When youâve lived next to someone for years, you get used to doing each other favors. Watching pets, collecting mail, watering plantsâit all becomes second nature. Thatâs exactly the kind of relationship I had with my neighbors. We werenât just people living side by side; we looked out for each other.
So when they called me in a rush before leaving for an unexpected trip, I didnât hesitate to say yes.
âCan you do me a quick favor?â my neighbor asked over the phone.
âOf course,â I replied, already assuming it would be something simple like checking the mailbox.
But then he said something that completely caught me off guard.
âCan you wrap our front door handle in aluminum foil?â
I paused, thinking I must have misheard him.
âSorry⊠what?â
âThe door handle,â he repeated casually. âJust wrap it in foil.â
I didnât question it at the time. Thatâs the kind of trust we had. Still, I couldnât deny how strange it sounded. Of all the things someone might ask before leaving town, this was definitely not one I expected.
A few minutes later, I found myself standing on their front porch, holding a roll of aluminum foil, feeling slightly ridiculous. I kept glancing around, half-expecting another neighbor to walk by and ask what on earth I was doing.
Carefully, I wrapped the handle just like they asked. It looked⊠odd, to say the least. Not exactly the kind of thing you see every day.
As I walked back to my house, my curiosity kicked in.
Why aluminum foil?
