Standing outside was a military officer in full dress uniform.
The house fell silent.
The officer looked directly at Camila.
“Are you Mrs. Camila Harrison?” he asked.
She nodded.
“Yes.”
The officer reached into a folder.
“I have something for you.”
Camila looked confused.
“For me?”
The officer nodded.
“This was left by Sergeant Michael Harrison.”
My heart nearly stopped.
My father.
The officer continued.
“He requested that this be delivered on his daughter’s prom day.”
Nobody spoke.
The room became completely silent.
Camila’s hands shook as she accepted the envelope.
I could barely breathe.
My father had planned something for this day?
Years ago?
Knowing he might never see it?
Slowly, Camila opened the letter.
As she began reading, the color drained from her face.
Her hands trembled.
The confidence disappeared from her eyes.
Then came something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Jessica and Lauren exchanged nervous glances.
“What does it say?” Jessica asked.
Camila didn’t answer.
The officer finally spoke.
“Perhaps you should read it aloud.”
Camila looked like she wanted to refuse.
But everyone was watching.
Finally, she began reading.
“My dearest daughter,
If you’re reading this, it means I couldn’t be there to see you grow into the amazing young woman I know you would become.
But there is something you should know.
I have always loved you more than words can express.
And because I love you, I made arrangements to protect your future.”
Camila’s voice cracked.
The room remained silent.
She continued.
“If anyone ever tries to make you feel unwanted, remember this: you were the greatest blessing of my life.
I have established a trust fund for your education, housing, and future needs. It becomes fully accessible on your prom day.
The attorney handling everything has instructions to ensure those funds belong only to you.”
Camila stopped reading.
Her face had turned completely pale.
The officer calmly handed me another envelope.
“This contains the account information and legal documents,” he explained.
I stared at it in disbelief.
My father had prepared for everything.
Even after he was gone.
Even after all these years.
The officer wasn’t finished.
“There is one more thing.”
He handed me a small velvet box.
Inside was a beautiful silver necklace.
Attached was a tiny note in my father’s handwriting.
It read:
“No matter where I am, I’ll always be proud of you.”
The tears came instantly.
Not tears of sadness.
Tears of love.
Tears of gratitude.
For years, Camila had made me feel powerless.
Invisible.
Worthless.
But my father had seen everything.
He had thought ahead.
He had protected me.
And he had found a way to stand beside me on the most important night of my life.
