A hush fell over the crowd. Murmurs started. Someone whispered, “Is this really happening?”
Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out
Juniper’s small voice broke the tension.
“Daddy, she told me not to tell you because she… she didn’t want me to ruin things.”
I knelt down to her level. “Junie, you didn’t do anything wrong. You did exactly what I would have wanted—you told me the truth.”
Turning back to Maribel, I felt a resolve I hadn’t known I had in years. “If we’re going to do this, there will be no secrets. No hiding. No telling my daughter she doesn’t matter in our family.”
Maribel’s eyes widened, and I could see the frustration building. She opened her mouth to argue, but I raised my hand.
“Not a word. I want honesty. Right here. Right now.”
The air felt electric, charged with anticipation. Guests held their breath as the tension grew. Maribel’s carefully rehearsed wedding-day perfection was crumbling before everyone’s eyes.
