He didn’t grab the keys.
Not yet.
But he didn’t walk away either.
“I could’ve just had a normal dad,” he said quietly.
Annie’s eyes softened.
“No,” she said. “You had a human one. I just refused to let you inherit the fantasy.”
He looked at her for a long time.
Then, slowly, he picked up the keys.
Not like a gift.
Like a weight he hadn’t agreed to carry—but couldn’t ignore anymore.
And for the first time that night, he didn’t ask about the car again.
