But the party instantly turned into chaos.
People started grabbing bags, drinks, and folding chairs while backing away from the grill like it was about to explode. One woman looked furious and pointed directly at my neighbor while arguing with him in front of everyone.
And that’s when the most satisfying part happened.
Two police officers suddenly walked into the frame.
Apparently, another neighbor had reported the situation after seeing smoke and hearing yelling coming from the yard. I watched as officers questioned him while several guests quietly left the party one by one.
Even through the blurry security footage, I could see the expression on his face completely change once the officers walked over to inspect the grill.
Because it still had our family name engraved on the side.
There was no possible way he could claim it was his.
About twenty minutes later, one officer actually called me directly after finding my phone number through our emergency contact information. I explained everything while trying not to laugh.
The officer paused for a moment and then said, “Well… your grill is safe. But your neighbor is having a very bad evening.”
The next day, while we were still on vacation, another neighbor helped move the grill back into our locked garage.
But the story didn’t end there.
When we finally returned home three days later, we found a handwritten note taped to our front door. It was from the neighbor.
The note was surprisingly short:
“I’m sorry. I should have asked.”
That was it.
No excuses.
No explanation.
No attempt to blame anyone else.
Just a simple apology.
For weeks afterward, things around the neighborhood felt awkward. Whenever he saw us outside, he immediately looked the other direction. His backyard parties suddenly stopped too. In fact, several neighbors later admitted they were shocked he took the grill in the first place because apparently he had borrowed things before without returning them quickly.
One neighbor even joked that our grill incident finally taught him a lesson the entire street had wanted him to learn for years.
Looking back now, I’m just grateful nobody got injured and the situation didn’t become more serious. But I still can’t believe someone would drag a giant grill out of another person’s backyard and honestly expect nobody to notice.
Needless to say, we upgraded our locks, added another security camera, and now keep the propane tank stored separately.
And every single time I grill burgers now, I can’t help but laugh remembering the exact moment karma showed up at my neighbor’s barbecue.
